Waxing Vs. Threading…That Is The Question?

Written on Sunday, January 29th, 2012 @ 5:05 pm

During my book club last week, the ladies began talking about waxing vs. threading one’s eyebrows. Since the young and awkward age of twelve, I have had my eyebrows professionally waxed each month to maintain a clean look. My beauty journey has been one of pain in order abide by our culture’s ideals of hairless women, except for long locks on our heads.

The Steps to Waxing Brows:

My hairstylist would place a small strip of hot wax over the unruly eyebrow hair. Then she would take a soft cloth strip, place it on the eyebrow and rub over it to make sure the hair was sticking to the wax. Then very fast, she would pull off the cloth in the opposite direction of the hair growth. Needless to say….it hurts!!!!!! (I have been known to curse.) I also have extremely sensitive facial skin; and I need to apply moisturizer to reduce redness.

Threading:

I was introduced to threading a few years ago at my local shopping mall. At first, ladies were having their eyebrows threaded in a kiosk; and then moved to a small mall shop. I have yet to try this method.

“Threading is an ancient hair removal technique that originated in India and is becoming increasing popular. Pure cotton threads are twisted around the brow hair to pluck it directly out of its follicle. Threading allows hair to be removed at a much cleaner and quicker pace than waxing, depending on the amount of hair your have and how thick it is. Unlike waxing, that can leave your skin irritated and red, threading has little contact with the skin. Skin irritation is less likely if you chose to go with threading instead of waxing. Your eyebrows will also grow back at a slower rate if you thread.”

No matter waxing or threading, each has side effects such as pain. Wouldn’t it be nice to travel back to prehistoric times? Hairy women were considered very attractive. Cavemen would have loved to club and bring us back to their caves for a little romancing!

Remember beauty is pain….we did this to ourselves ladies!

“Pinning”

Written on Sunday, January 22nd, 2012 @ 10:46 pm

I have a new favorite hobby…Pinterest (www.Pinterest.com)! If you are not drinking the Kool-Aid, Pinterest is a viral pin board. Users are able to post (“pin”), repost (“repin”) and “like” images (“pins”) in millions of categories such as food, home decor, apparel and much more. In other words, you, your girlfriends and women all over the world are able to share amazing ideas and accomplishments over the Internet.

Pinterest has given me new viewpoints on how to decorate my home, amazing recipes for delicious meals and directions on how to create perfect smokey eyes. Plus, I have enjoyed sharing my “pins” on my own customized “board” for others to view. I like to think of Pinterest as a gathering of my closest hundred friends; and we are sharing interesting topics from the comfort of our home computers, iPhones, iPads, etc.

Because of gaining popularity, Pinterest has become quite an exclusive “club”. In order to join, have a current member send you an invite; and then welcome to the world of “Pinning”.

And you thought Facebook was addicting!

The Home Decor Must-Have: Chandeliers!

Written on Tuesday, January 10th, 2012 @ 2:10 pm

Chandeliers are the hottest new home decor trend! They are no longer just for the entry foyer or formal dinning room. Move over ceiling fans, chandeliers are making their way into bedrooms, living rooms, and outdoor porches; and I just found the perfect chandelier for my laundry room.

Chandeliers give any room an elegant, and sometimes funky twist. They may be extremely formal with crystals and silver. Or you may find an old chandelier at a garage sale and recreate it using bold spray paint colors (see Pinterest for ideas). I have even seen mid-evil cast iron chandeliers ideal for any man cave!

Plus, you don’t have to spend a fortune to give your rooms this elegant accessory. An assortment of chandeliers can be found at Lowe’s and Ikea. Also, I just ordered a beautiful pink chandelier for my daughter’s room from Amazon.com (plus free shipping).

So for a fast, easy and budget-friendly room update, install a chandelier! Happy decorating!

Recycle With Accessories

Written on Thursday, August 25th, 2011 @ 7:44 am

This Fall, if your budget doesn’t allow for a complete wardrobe renovation….recycle last year’s Fall closet with new accessories.

This money-saving fashion tip can turn any past outfit into a trendy new look within seconds.

For example, take a pair of last Fall’s jeggings, a long cardigan and cami; and accessorize with wedge booties from Kohl’s®, an Old Navy scarf and jewelry from Charming Charlie.

Recycling your wardrobe with accessories makes you look like a million without spending a million. Happy Shopping!

Leather & Lace

Written on Friday, August 19th, 2011 @ 7:53 am

No, it’s not a Don Henley/Stevie Nicks’ song or a 1980′s Madonna movie…it’s two hot Fall trends coming to a store near you!

Leather skirts are walking the runways and being shown in every style…my personal favorite is the pencil skirt. You’ll look right out of Vogue with a cardigan/cami combo, leather skirt, fishnet stockings and booties.

Lace overlay shirts and blouses are providing a softer/sexier style. Lace is great for day and night; and paired with a leather skirt…there’s no stopping any fashionista.

Leather and Lace can be found at all retailers. Gap’s Black Leather Paneled Skirt retails $248. Ann Taylor Loft’s Lace Overlay w/ Stripe retails $39.50.

Fall Must-Have: The Petite-Flap Purse

Written on Wednesday, August 17th, 2011 @ 9:55 am

A Fall Must-have is the Petite-Flap Purse. During the chilly Fall months, it will be on every fashionista’s shoulder for work and play. It’s large enough for the essentials (phone, wallet, lip stick, tampon, etc.); and its petite size won’t weigh you down when lunching with girlfriends or shopping with your favorite guy. Plus, find it in all the hot looks including plaid, animal print, leather and sequins. The petite flap purse will definitely rock any Fall look and can be found at all retailers. I have my eye on a leopard print at Fossil and a tweed at Coach (decisions, decisions)!

Botox…Or Not To Botox?

Written on Monday, August 15th, 2011 @ 8:36 am

Recently, I was reading an article regarding the facts of Botox; and I wanted to share this info with my readers.

Common fears/beliefs:

1. Botox can kill you

FACT: “Botox does what it does because it’s a mild poison, and too much of any poison, no matter how mild, can kill you. What the statement misses is the ‘mild’ part and the amount required to cause harm. The truth is, for Botox to become lethal, at least 3,000 units need to be delivered in a relatively short amount of time. Most cosmetic Botox treatments use 100 units or less. That’s a pretty sizeable safety margin.”

2.  Botox wears off into your bloodstream and organs

FACT: “Because of the way Botox works, it cannot spread beyond the area of the injection site. This is because of the way that it interacts with muscle tissue. Botox binds with chemical factories in nerve cells, preventing them from sending specific types of signals. Those signals are what tell muscles to contract, which is what causes wrinkling. When the muscles remain totally relaxed, wrinkles disappear. What Botox is doing is preventing the weakening muscles from contracting. The bind that Botox makes is in specific cells, so it does not spread once bound. As the clinical effect wears off, it’s not because of Botox has broken free in its binding site, it’s because our body makes more receptors for those contractile signals.”

3. Only “Real Housewives” and wealthy women receive Botox

FACT: “Most common users are working mothers between ages 40-55 with a household income of $100,000 or less.”

After reading these facts for myself, I will never get Botox. This information could someday be altered after years of medical testing. Whenever you are injecting a foreign material into your body, there is always a chance something could go wrong and your body rejects it. Plus, injecting Botox hurts (not a fan of needles) and you can get large lumps all over your face. I prefer to wear sunscreen and a night cream. It’s cheaper and less maintenance. I will grow old gracefully.

What about you?
