National Wear Red Day

Written on Friday, February 3rd, 2012 @ 8:38 am

February 3, 2012 is National Wear Red Day!

The #1 killer of women is heart disease….not cancer. The American Heart Association launched the Go Red For Women campaign to create awareness of female heart health.

Knowledge is power; and prevention is key! Heart disease can be eliminated by eating a healthy diet, continuously exercising and not smoking. Plus, it’s important to learn the signs of a heart attack to prevent premature death.

*Signs of a Heart Attack:

-Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of your chest. It lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back.

-Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.

-Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort

-Other signs such as breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.

-As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain.

However, if you think something is wrong, go with your gut and call your doctor or 911 immediately. You are loved.

Today, band together with your mothers, sisters, best friends and fight heart disease one fabulous red outfit at a time!

DIY Doily Heart T-Shirts

Written on Thursday, January 19th, 2012 @ 3:53 pm

Valentine’s Day is less than a month away; and it’s time to make your own “Adoily-able T-Shirt”. I found this incredibly easy and budget-friendly craft in the February 2012 edition of Disney’s Family Fun Magazine.

Instructions:

“Place a newspaper inside a pre-washed t-shirt so that the paint won’t bleed through. Coat the center of the back of a doily with a thin layer of glue stick. Press the doily onto the shirt, sticky side down. Pour fabric paint into a shallow dish. Using a foam stencil brush, dab fabric paint all over the lace part of the doily. Then carefully, peel the doily from the shirt, then let the paint dry. Set the pain according to the manufacturer’s instructions.”

This February 14th, you will look sweet; and no one will ever know how simple your look was to make!

Spring Is Beginning To Bloom At Target

Written on Wednesday, January 18th, 2012 @ 8:00 pm

It’s 30° outside, but warmer breezes are right around the corner! I am noticing the Spring fashions are slowing making their way into the stores; and I was pleasantly surprised by some wonderful casual dresses at Target.

My favorite (pictured) is this yellow-belted knit dress in navy and white stripes (Retails $24.99). Plus, there is a small version of this dress for girls sizes 4-14 (Retails $14.99) with a hot pink belt and white and black stripes.

It’s never too early to start shopping for your Spring/Summer wardrobe; and you can’t go wrong with the super cute and affordable deals at Target!

Plus, Target has some of the most vibrant colored swim suits! It would be a shame to pass up these amazing looks just because it’s snowing outside.

Bridesmaid Dresses…They’ve Come A Long Way!

Written on Monday, October 24th, 2011 @ 9:08 am

Recently, a very good friend became engaged; and I was so honored that she asked me to be a bridesmaid. Now, besides looking forward to the “big day,” I am anxiously awaiting the style of  bridesmaid dress that she will choose.

In the past, bridesmaid dresses were horrific or how I would describe as a great fashion tragedy. In fact, the dresses were so awful (We’ve all seen “27 Dresses”) that I had to wonder if the bride liked her maids or if it was just an evil plot for revenge.

Thank goodness today’s bridesmaid dresses are chic and sophisticated; but ready to take on any bridal challenges and difficult dance moves. I am a big fan of JCrew and Ann Taylor’s bridesmaid dress collections. Each dress is simple, elegant and will keep all attention on the bride.

Note: No matter how fashionable a bridesmaid dress, one will never wear it again to another social function.

Tis’ The Season…For Holiday Fashion

Written on Thursday, October 20th, 2011 @ 8:03 am

It’s ten days until Halloween; but most holiday collections arrive in stores next week. This year, every retailer’s collection has a different theme; which will enable fashionistas everywhere to find the perfect outfit to fit their unique personalities. No one wants to look the same at a holiday gala or New Year’s party.

White House Black Market: This holiday collection focuses on three colors: black, silver and red. Their sophisticated and sexy fashions will create a hot look on those cold December nights. I have my husband’s semi-formal holiday party to attend; and the red velvet suit has my name on it. I normally freeze at these events; so a long sleeve and pant will be elegant with an edge paired with bling jewelry and silver heels.

Talbots: It’s about simple, classic and bold. Besides a collection of black and silver, Talbots’ holiday collection includes bold pinks, greens and blues. The hot pink kimono dress is absolutely stunning. With the right accessories, this look will be talked about until next year’s party.

Ann Taylor: I just saw the holiday collection preview Monday and Demi Moore looks amazing in these fabulous neutrals. It’s all about soft and sexy with beige colored lace and cashmere. This collection will be perfect for a small cocktail affair with a large fireplace warming the room.

So whatever your style this holiday season, you will find the perfect ensemble for your party! Happy Shopping!

Our Favorite Retailers Support The Cause

Written on Monday, October 3rd, 2011 @ 9:13 am

This month many of our favorite retailers are supporting breast cancer awareness. They are selling one-of-a-kind items and donating a
portion of the proceeds to breast cancer research.

Check out these fabulous stores and their mission to help the fight:

1. dressbarn – “Over 800 dressbarn stores will sell “Lilac” a plush dog toy, for $6. A minimum of $2.50 from every sale will be donated to the American Cancer Society to support local and national cancer initiatives.”

2.Lady Foot Locker – “The following items: fleece hooded sweatshirt, gym tote, a donation card, and a string bracelet including breast cancer messaging about the importance of detecting breast cancer early, when it is most treatable. A portion of the sale of each item benefit the Society’s fight to save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.”

3.H&M – “From October 3-17, 2011, H&M has agreed to sell special garments in approximately 150 US stores. The special garments include (2) bra and panty sets and a robe. The American Cancer Society will receive 25 percent of the proceeds from the sale of these garments.”

4. Longaberger® – “2011 marks the 16th year of the Longaberger Company’s “Horizon of Hope” charitable sales promotion, from which $2 per signature item sold from July through October has been donated to the American Cancer Society.”

5. Ann Taylor – “70% of full-price purchases of the Ann Taylor Cares Ring & Necklace will be donated to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® up to $150,000.”

Plus there are many more. So this October, shop for a cause and help fight breast cancer! Happy shopping!

Wearing White After Labor Day?

Written on Tuesday, September 27th, 2011 @ 7:55 am

The summer has ended, but is it ok to wear white after Labor Day? Is there a correct etiquette?

Well, a true fashionista will abandon all rules and wear white whenever she wants to. Coco Chanel wore her famous white suits all year long; and why shouldn’t you wear your white 365 days a year?

Whether it’s white, winter white, mother of pearl, cream, etc., make it a year-round staple in your closet.

Note: I am not a fan of white shoes after Labor Day unless you are a bride.

High-End Fashion For All

Written on Monday, September 26th, 2011 @ 7:54 am

High-end designers (and celeb-designers) are finally getting it right! Design and price for the masses; and make an even bigger profit on quality merchandise for department stores.

Retail stores are teaming up with high-end fashion designers and expanding their customer base to middle-income shoppers. This is making those designers’ reputations sky-rocket as normal people are enjoying well-made housewares and fashion at reasonable prices.

Isaac Mizrahi was the first big designer (that I can recall) who made an exclusive line for Target. His products were high quality and great design. As his popularity grew, other designers caught on fast. Today, Missoni is the latest designer to offer housewares, clothing, accessories at Target; and those products are flying off the shelves.

But Target is not the only department store joining forces with famous designers. In 2007, Vera Wang introduced “Simply Vera” for Kohl’s. I am a huge fan of this line. Every item I have purchased is fashionable and wears well even after several washes. My new favorite designer at Kohl’s is Jennifer Lopez. Her fashions are what I like to call “edgy/sophisticate” and I can’t wait to wear these new Fall fashions.

So now women (and men) everywhere can enjoy fabulous fashions that were once reserved only for Saks and Neiman’s. Happy Shopping!

Women’s Halloween Costumes?!?!?!

Written on Wednesday, September 21st, 2011 @ 8:10 am

Is it just me or is the whole Halloween fashion industry gone a little too risk-ay?

I can’t seem to find an adult women’s Halloween costume that isn’t cut too low or the skirt is not too high. Or accompanied with thigh high stockings. Is this Halloween or the Victoria Secret store?

Last week, I went to a local Halloween store; and the only costumes available that cover most of the body are witches or skin tight black cats. I wanted to be Tinker Bell but that costume would have fit my toddler.

I’m not a prude, I just don’t need the neighbors talking when I distribute candy to the trick-or-treaters – it’s just not appropriate. Back in my college days, I am sure I would have worn something cute that showed off my legs and bust. Or if I was attending an adult Halloween party with my husband, I am sure he would love me in something a little sexy.

But since I am just giving out candy this year, I will settle on a Halloween t-shirt from Target, jeggings, black tall boots and perhaps a witches hat. Happy Halloween!
