Create The Look For Less

Written on Tuesday, March 27th, 2012 @ 3:16 pm

Not sure about you, but I am constantly on Pinterest “liking” or “repining” women’s apparel ideas. I try to create these outfits by reinventing the clothes I already own. However, my “go-to” store, Kohl’s, helps me shape these styles for less.

I recently fell in love with this spring casual look.

I already owned a gray 3/4 length sleeve ruffle-front top from Gap. (I purchased the top 2 years ago; and it goes with everything…smart buy) Now, I just needed to find a navy/white cardigan, denim capris and yellow flats. I was able to find all the pieces easily at Kohl’s. Not only were these garments on sale, I also received extra savings using a 30% off coupon.

Kohl’s AB Studio® Cardigan – $27, Gap Ruffle Gray Shirt $27 (2009) Kohl’s Simply® Vera Wang Jean Capris $29.99,Kohl’s SO® Bright Yellow flats $13.00

This outfit was created for under $100. To reinvent new styles, review your closet first and then shop at your “go-to” stores for the hottest looks for less!

Spring/Summer Fashion Trends: Chartreuse

Written on Tuesday, March 27th, 2012 @ 12:36 pm

InStyle, Vogue and Glamour are filled with gorgeous scenes of Spring and Summer….famous landmarks, white sandy beaches, parks full of blooming trees and groovy backyard pool parties. And each page has one thing in common….Chartreuse.

A mixture of yellow and green, this color is hot! It’s time to start filling your closet with chartreuse garments, accent pieces and accessories. I predict this amazing hue will be seen for many seasons to come.

This dynamic color can be worn for every occasion; and creates a “wow” factor to every outfit. However, you don’t have to spend Saks’ prices to add chartreuse to your wardrobe. I recently went shopping at my “go to” store, Kohl’s, and purchased a chartreuse tank ($5.99) that will be paired with either a navy/beige or gray open-front cardigan and navy or denim capris. Plus, Vera Wang has a lovely gray/chartreuse cardigan that I have my eye on (Need to shop before my 30% off coupon expires!).

Also, since I am a shoe addict, I added some navy/chartreuse flip flops ($7.99) to add a punch to any ensemble.

But Chartreuse is not just to be worn….it can also add a refreshing look to any room decor. I have a very ornate silver mirror that I plan to spray paint chartreuse and hang in my navy/coffee foyer. It will add a bold and fun look to a very elegant room.

So this Spring/Summer, have fun with chartreuse whether wearing or decorating with it!

The Story Of A Family Room

Written on Saturday, March 24th, 2012 @ 8:50 pm

One of the reasons I fell in love with our new home was the family room. The size of the room, the beautiful white brick fireplace, the separation from the kitchen and the elegant french doors leading to the deck sold me. When I first toured the home, the family room was decorated straight from a Pottery Barn magazine. The decor was beautiful; and I couldn’t wait to make this room our own.

Before

The family room was originally very formal; and even though gorgeous, I needed a room that could embrace our current furniture and be a cozy haven for my family and friends.

When the time came to remodel this room, changing the wall color was the first item on the to-do list. I needed a color that would make the mouldings, french doors and fireplace pop! While looking at the color pallet at Lowe’s I saw it….Eddie Bauer’s Butternut. It’s a very warm color that brings so much life into the white trimmings of the room.

With the new wall color, it was important to update the light switch plates and air registers. It’s amazing how fast those little updates transform a room instantly.

Additionally, our family room furniture is large and super comfortable. The furniture colors blend very well with the walls, rug (also purchased at Lowe’s) and accessories. My husband and I have created a room that we are able to relax and enjoy our days and evenings. Now, I just need to find the right window treatments. I am thinking valances on each window.

After

Stay tuned. We plan to purchase new family room furniture in the next couple of years (This furniture is approaching the 10 year mark and my adorable child likes to put her Cheeto hands all over the couch). We would like to create another wonderful look by adding a sectional, chairs and mounting the television above the fireplace.

So many ideas, so little time! Happy Decorating!

Spring/Summer Fashion Trends: Coral

Written on Tuesday, March 20th, 2012 @ 3:13 pm

Today is officially the first day of Spring! And even though my allergies are awful, I can’t wait to begin wearing 2012 Spring/Summer fashions.

One of the awesome Spring/Summer trends is the color coral. It can be worn day or night; and it pairs nicely with any color giving your outfit a splash of pizzazz!

While Spring cleaning this year, I found a pair of coral capris that haven’t been worn in years. Well, they are cleaned and ready to be seen! I am pairing them with a great navy and white stripped boat-neck, 3/4 length sleeve shirt and a sterling silver cuff and earrings.

At Kohl’s, I purchased coral shorts and a sequin embellished cream tank top. To finish the look, I added platform wedge sandals that have a touch of coral in the fabric. If I add a jean jacket or a dark lime green open-front cardigan with large bold jewelry, I can take this look into the evening!

This Spring/Summer, review your closet first to see if any past coral items can be brought back to life; and then take advantage of super Spring sales.

Happy Shopping!

St. Patrick’s Day…Do You Know The History?

Written on Friday, March 16th, 2012 @ 11:23 am

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Each year, Americans celebrate this day with green beer, parades/festivals and of course, corned beef and cabbage. But did you know that St. Patrick wasn’t even Irish?….and he never chased snakes out of Ireland?

St. Patrick was born in Brittian circa 390 AD. He was taken prisoner by Irish raiders and under captivity, he became extremely religious. After escaping, he had a vision which lead him back to Ireland as a missionary. Eventually, Patrick became a Catholic priest and incorporated Celtic traditions and rituals into his lessons of Christianity. St. Patrick died on March 17th, which is celebrated as his feast day.

Also, it is true that snakes do not inhabit Ireland today, but they never did. Ireland is an island surrounded by extremely cold water which would not allow snakes to migrate. “But since snakes often represent evil in literature, ‘when Patrick drives the snakes out of Ireland, it is symbolically saying he drove the old, evil, pagan ways out of Ireland [and] brought in a new age’.”

Now that you know a little history, how are you celebrating St. Patrick’s Day?

They’re Magically Delicious!

Written on Thursday, March 15th, 2012 @ 1:24 pm

I needed a great treat idea for my daughter’s St. Patrick’s Day school party. Of course, I logged onto Pinterest. I found (via a Bettycrocker.com photograph) Lucky Charm Cupcakes and created my own recipe!

Ingredients & Instructions:

Duncan Hines Classic White cake mix, eggs, oil, water, green food coloring, box of powdered sugar, 1 stick of butter, milk, vanilla, St. Patrick’s Day cupcake holders, green sprinkles and Lucky Charms cereal.

Make the cupcakes as directed on the box and also add green food coloring. When cupcakes are cooled, make buttercream icing (http://www.chsugar.com/recipes/recipedisplay.asp?RecipeId=Va1015200120234) and again add green food coloring. Spread icing layer on top of cupcakes and add green sprinkles and cereal.

It’s so easy and makes a very eye-catching dessert kids and adults will love!

Happy St.Patrick’s Day! Enjoy!

Steak Sandwiches!

Written on Tuesday, March 13th, 2012 @ 12:29 pm

Last Saturday night, my husband (The Grill Master) grilled some amazing steaks. Fortunately, there were leftovers for steak sandwiches. Normally, we make steak sandwiches by grilling 1/2 thick ribeyes. However, why not make this same recipe by slicing steak instead?

Ingredients:

Bakery fresh hoagies or petite loaves, sliced provolone cheese, garlic spread and steak. (Optional: Add grilled onions)

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 375°. Lay foil on baking pan and grease with Pam. Slice loaves horizontally in half (be careful not to slice your fingers….I had an accident). Lay loaf halves on sheet. Smooth garlic spread each half of loaf. Thinly slice the steak and lay on bottom half. Then add two slices of cheese on top of steak. Place in oven for 10 minutes to heat up; and then broil for 10 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

This sandwich is very flavorful and filling! Enjoy!
