Waxing Vs. Threading…That Is The Question?

Written on Sunday, January 29th, 2012 @ 5:05 pm

During my book club last week, the ladies began talking about waxing vs. threading one’s eyebrows. Since the young and awkward age of twelve, I have had my eyebrows professionally waxed each month to maintain a clean look. My beauty journey has been one of pain in order abide by our culture’s ideals of hairless women, except for long locks on our heads.

The Steps to Waxing Brows:

My hairstylist would place a small strip of hot wax over the unruly eyebrow hair. Then she would take a soft cloth strip, place it on the eyebrow and rub over it to make sure the hair was sticking to the wax. Then very fast, she would pull off the cloth in the opposite direction of the hair growth. Needless to say….it hurts!!!!!! (I have been known to curse.) I also have extremely sensitive facial skin; and I need to apply moisturizer to reduce redness.

Threading:

I was introduced to threading a few years ago at my local shopping mall. At first, ladies were having their eyebrows threaded in a kiosk; and then moved to a small mall shop. I have yet to try this method.

“Threading is an ancient hair removal technique that originated in India and is becoming increasing popular. Pure cotton threads are twisted around the brow hair to pluck it directly out of its follicle. Threading allows hair to be removed at a much cleaner and quicker pace than waxing, depending on the amount of hair your have and how thick it is. Unlike waxing, that can leave your skin irritated and red, threading has little contact with the skin. Skin irritation is less likely if you chose to go with threading instead of waxing. Your eyebrows will also grow back at a slower rate if you thread.”

No matter waxing or threading, each has side effects such as pain. Wouldn’t it be nice to travel back to prehistoric times? Hairy women were considered very attractive. Cavemen would have loved to club and bring us back to their caves for a little romancing!

Remember beauty is pain….we did this to ourselves ladies!

New Reasons To Love Chocolate!

Written on Friday, January 27th, 2012 @ 10:54 am

Today, January 27th, is National Chocolate Cake Day! I love chocolate cake…actually I love chocolate! Did you know that most women eat 11 pounds of chocolate a year? Scary!!!! However, when eaten in moderation, chocolate is actually very beneficial to women’s health.

The benefits of eating chocolate:

-”Cocoa contains phenylethyamine, theobromine, theophylline, tele-methylhistamine, and Serotonin which are all mood enhancers. Phenylethylamine works as a upper. Theobromine is a mild antidepressant. Some women feel calmer after eating their chocolate. Other women feel more alert and focused. It gives them energy without caffeine jitters.”

-”Women who ate chocolate, had more desire and enjoyed sex more than women who ate no chocolate. Since sex drive is affected by stress and nerves, eating chocolate that is a mood enhancer, could certainly have an effect.”

-”New research shows that cocoa flavonoids and stearic acid lowers LDL (bad cholesterol); decreases platelet activation leading to clot formation; lowers blood pressure; and supports healthy cardiovascular function.”

So celebrate today with one piece of chocolate cake and enjoy the benefits!

“Pinning”

Written on Sunday, January 22nd, 2012 @ 10:46 pm

I have a new favorite hobby…Pinterest (www.Pinterest.com)! If you are not drinking the Kool-Aid, Pinterest is a viral pin board. Users are able to post (“pin”), repost (“repin”) and “like” images (“pins”) in millions of categories such as food, home decor, apparel and much more. In other words, you, your girlfriends and women all over the world are able to share amazing ideas and accomplishments over the Internet.

Pinterest has given me new viewpoints on how to decorate my home, amazing recipes for delicious meals and directions on how to create perfect smokey eyes. Plus, I have enjoyed sharing my “pins” on my own customized “board” for others to view. I like to think of Pinterest as a gathering of my closest hundred friends; and we are sharing interesting topics from the comfort of our home computers, iPhones, iPads, etc.

Because of gaining popularity, Pinterest has become quite an exclusive “club”. In order to join, have a current member send you an invite; and then welcome to the world of “Pinning”.

And you thought Facebook was addicting!

Golden Oreo Cookie Cupcakes With Homemade Buttercream Icing!

Written on Friday, January 20th, 2012 @ 4:41 pm

I love Pinterest; and I found a recipe to make Oreo cookie cupcakes. However, in my house, chocolate Oreo cookies make a huge mess! So I decided to make these cupcakes with Golden Oreo Sandwich Cookies. Plus, they are super easy to make!

Directions:

Place half of an Oreo cookie in the bottom of the cupcake liner (cream side up and set aside the top half for later). Then make cupcakes as directed on a Duncan Hines Yellow Butter cake mix.

Homemade Buttercream Icing:  Use a hand mixer and blend: 1/3 cup softened real butter, 4 1/2 cups powdered sugar, 1/4 cup milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla.

Smooth a generous layer of icing on each cupcake and top with the extra Golden Oreo cookie half.

OMG! These are delicious and very rich!

Enjoy!

DIY Doily Heart T-Shirts

Written on Thursday, January 19th, 2012 @ 3:53 pm

Valentine’s Day is less than a month away; and it’s time to make your own “Adoily-able T-Shirt”. I found this incredibly easy and budget-friendly craft in the February 2012 edition of Disney’s Family Fun Magazine.

Instructions:

“Place a newspaper inside a pre-washed t-shirt so that the paint won’t bleed through. Coat the center of the back of a doily with a thin layer of glue stick. Press the doily onto the shirt, sticky side down. Pour fabric paint into a shallow dish. Using a foam stencil brush, dab fabric paint all over the lace part of the doily. Then carefully, peel the doily from the shirt, then let the paint dry. Set the pain according to the manufacturer’s instructions.”

This February 14th, you will look sweet; and no one will ever know how simple your look was to make!

Spring Is Beginning To Bloom At Target

Written on Wednesday, January 18th, 2012 @ 8:00 pm

It’s 30° outside, but warmer breezes are right around the corner! I am noticing the Spring fashions are slowing making their way into the stores; and I was pleasantly surprised by some wonderful casual dresses at Target.

My favorite (pictured) is this yellow-belted knit dress in navy and white stripes (Retails $24.99). Plus, there is a small version of this dress for girls sizes 4-14 (Retails $14.99) with a hot pink belt and white and black stripes.

It’s never too early to start shopping for your Spring/Summer wardrobe; and you can’t go wrong with the super cute and affordable deals at Target!

Plus, Target has some of the most vibrant colored swim suits! It would be a shame to pass up these amazing looks just because it’s snowing outside.

Reduce Your Risk Of Thyroid Cancer

Written on Wednesday, January 18th, 2012 @ 1:40 pm

The fastest growing cancer in women is…… thyroid cancer. Dr. Oz recently explained that the increase could possibly be related to the use of dental x-rays and mammograms. Did you know that the apron dentists use for your dental x-rays has a little flap which can be lifted up and wrapped around your neck? Many dentists don’t bother to use it. Also, there is something called a “thyroid guard” for use during mammograms. It is important that you ask for these guards during your next dental x-ray or mammogram! These may save your life.

Happy Adoption Story

Written on Monday, January 16th, 2012 @ 10:03 am

When I think of adoption, the first words that immediately enter my mind are “selflessness” and “conditional love”. There are so many children in this world waiting for a family to love them; and I want to tell you the story of an amazing family that is so excited to bring an adopted child into their lives.

To begin, Mike and Elizabeth (a high school friend) have an incredible love story. After meeting at a wedding and spending two wonderful weeks together, Mike was deployed to Iraq. For the next twenty months, they maintained a long-distance relationship even though Mike also spent time in Germany and Fort Benning. They talked or wrote to each other almost every single day and created an unbreakable bond. When Mike returned home they were quickly engaged and married. Mike and Elizabeth’s happily ever after was just beginning….and their dreams came true and hearts opened wider with the birth of their daughter, Morgan.

So in love with their daughter, they wanted to expand their family. Unfortunately, they endured two painful and heartbreaking ectopic pregnancies. But instead of giving up, Mike and Elizabeth decided adoption was the perfect path to create the family they always wanted.

Currently, they are waiting for their new baby. The child that will be paired with this family is lucky beyond words. I hope Mike, Elizabeth and Morgan will be united with their new addition very soon to complete this “Happy Adoption Story”.

For more information on this wonderful family or to send them words of support and love, please visit, www.waitingparents.adoptwebsite.com or happyadoptionstory.blogspot.com.

My love to you all!
