On December 7th, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the United States Naval base at Pearl Harbor, which sparked the beginning of World War II. After the attack, Japanese Admiral Yamamoto was quoted saying, “We have awakened a sleeping giant and have instilled in him a terrible resolve”.
Sixty years later, on September 11th, 2001, the United States experienced the worst terrorist attacks on American soil brought about by the evil plots of Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda. And again, the sleeping giant awoke. The events of 9/11 not only brought about loss, but created heros, unity among Americans and a determination to fight terrorism.
Ten years later, Americans are still fighting this war; and life is different. We’ll never fly on an airplane or enter a large skyscraper without remembering 9/11, and lives lost that day and lost fighting a cowardly enemy in Afghanistan and throughout the Middle East.
I am proud to be an American and live in the best country in the world. I have the freedom everyday to speak my mind, worship the way I choose and feel safe because of brave soldiers and emergency servicemen and women. The United States is strong; and this giant will never be beaten.
