A Breakfast Delight…*Monkey Bread!

Written on Friday, September 30th, 2011 @ 7:55 am

Monkey Bread is one of my favorite Saturday morning homemade breakfasts. This recipe is easy and super yummy! In fact, it’s hard to stop eating this wonderful sweet treat!
Ingredients:
  • 24 ounces frozen dinner roll dough
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 (3.4 ounce) package instant butterscotch pudding mix
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  1. The night or several hours before, grease and flour a 9 or 10 inch tube pan. Mix brown sugar and pudding mix together. Mix white sugar and cinnamon together. Place frozen dinner rolls in pan a layer at a time. Sprinkle brown sugar and pudding mix over first layer of rolls. Sprinkle sugar and cinnamon mixture over the brown sugar and pudding mixture. Spread half the nuts and melted butter over first layer. Repeat with the next layer.
  2. Place on counter over night. Do not cover. Next morning bake in a preheated 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) oven for 30 minutes. Let stand a few minutes and turn pan over onto serving platter.

Enjoy!

September’s ModHousewife Award Goes To…..Adele!

Written on Friday, September 30th, 2011 @ 7:54 am

It took the whole month, but I finally decided that September’s ModHousewife Award goes to…..Adele (applause)!

Also known as Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, her performance at the MTV Music Video Awards left me in awe as she sang “Someone Like  You”. Her incredible voice was so deep with emotion that the audience truly understood her pain of a broken heart for a past love.

At the age of 23, Adele has released two albums both debuting #1 in the United States and United Kingdom.

“The Official Chart Company announced that Adele is the first living artist to achieve the feat of two top five hits in both the U.K. Offical Single Chart and the Official Albums Chart simultaneously since The Beatles in 1964.”

Adele’s career will only blossom more! Her lyrics and soulful voice will win more awards and inspire more girls to follow their dreams. I am looking forward to her next piece of art; and I will continue to sing my heart out when her songs play on my car radio.

*Smoked Mozzarella & Pulled Pork Grilled Sandwich

Written on Thursday, September 29th, 2011 @ 8:34 am

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like grilled cheese sandwiches; but what about a makeover on the old favorite?

Try a Grilled Smoked Mozzarella & Pulled Pork. Not sure what to do with pulled pork leftovers; well this is the perfect recipe!

Cover two pieces of white bread with sliced, smoked mozzarella. Then top with a thin layer of the pork. Melt two teaspoons of bacon fast in pan over medium heat, lay in sandwich. When crisp, flip the sandwich while adding two more teaspoons of fat to the pan, and cook until bread is crisp and cheese is melted. When done, cut into triangles with a pizza cutter and dip into barbecue sauce to eat. Enjoy!

Happy New Year!

Written on Wednesday, September 28th, 2011 @ 7:44 am

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is celebrated from sundown on Sept. 28 to nightfall on Sept. 30.

“A common greeting on Rosh Hashanah is shana tovah u’metukah, Hebrew for ‘a good and sweet new year.’ Many traditional Rosh Hashanah foods – apples and honey, raisin challah, honey cake and pomegranate — are eaten, in part, for this reason.”

Here is a wonderful Holiday Apple Cake  recipe to feast upon this New Year.

Ingredients: 3 eggs, 2 cups sugar, 1 cup vegetable oil, 1/2 tsp. vanilla, 2 cups flour, 1 tsp. baking soda, 1/2  tsp. cinnamon, 1/4 tsp. nutmeg, 1/8 tsp. cloves, 1/8 tsp. ginger, pinch of salt, 2 cups Granny Smith apples peeled, cored and thinly sliced.

Butter and flour a Bundt pan. Preheat oven to 350°. In a medium bowl, beat eggs with sugar, then slowly add oil while constantly whisking. Stir in vanilla.

In a large bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger and salt. Stir in egg mixture, then fold in apples.

Pour batter in Bundt pan and bake 55-60 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Cool for a few minutes, then flip over onto a plate. When cool, dust with powdered sugar. Enjoy!

*Bacon Cheeseburger Pasta

Written on Tuesday, September 27th, 2011 @ 7:56 am

My husband loves Hamburger Helper, so last night I made him a homemade version. This is a wonderful recipe that the whole family will ask for again and again!

Ingredients: 8 oz. of penne pasta, 1 lb. of ground beef, 6 bacon strips (diced), 1 can condensed tomato soup (undiluted), 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese.

Cook pasta according to package directions. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink; drain and set aside.

In the same skillet, cook bacon until crisp. Using a slotted spoon, remove to paper towels; drain discarding drippings. Drain pasta; add to the skillet. Stir in the soup, beef and bacon; heat through. Sprinkle with cheese; cover and cook until the cheese is melted.

(To save time, use precooked bacon.)

Wearing White After Labor Day?

Written on Tuesday, September 27th, 2011 @ 7:55 am

The summer has ended, but is it ok to wear white after Labor Day? Is there a correct etiquette?

Well, a true fashionista will abandon all rules and wear white whenever she wants to. Coco Chanel wore her famous white suits all year long; and why shouldn’t you wear your white 365 days a year?

Whether it’s white, winter white, mother of pearl, cream, etc., make it a year-round staple in your closet.

Note: I am not a fan of white shoes after Labor Day unless you are a bride.

*Herbed Egg Noodles

Written on Monday, September 26th, 2011 @ 7:56 am

Need a fast and homemade side dish, try these herbed egg noodles. My husband was shocked how fast I made these; and he loved them so much he had thirds.

Ingredients:

8 oz. uncooked wide egg noodles, 3 tablespoons butter, 1 garlic clove, minced (I used 1 tsp of garlic powder), 1/4 tsp of salt, 1/4 tsp of dill weed, 1/4 tsp dried thyme

Cook noodles according to package directions. Meanwhile, in a skillet, melt butter. Stir in the garlic, salt, dill and thyme. Drain noodles and add to butter mixture. Toss to coat.

The noodles pair very well with a grilled teriyaki chicken breast and green beans. Enjoy!

High-End Fashion For All

Written on Monday, September 26th, 2011 @ 7:54 am

High-end designers (and celeb-designers) are finally getting it right! Design and price for the masses; and make an even bigger profit on quality merchandise for department stores.

Retail stores are teaming up with high-end fashion designers and expanding their customer base to middle-income shoppers. This is making those designers’ reputations sky-rocket as normal people are enjoying well-made housewares and fashion at reasonable prices.

Isaac Mizrahi was the first big designer (that I can recall) who made an exclusive line for Target. His products were high quality and great design. As his popularity grew, other designers caught on fast. Today, Missoni is the latest designer to offer housewares, clothing, accessories at Target; and those products are flying off the shelves.

But Target is not the only department store joining forces with famous designers. In 2007, Vera Wang introduced “Simply Vera” for Kohl’s. I am a huge fan of this line. Every item I have purchased is fashionable and wears well even after several washes. My new favorite designer at Kohl’s is Jennifer Lopez. Her fashions are what I like to call “edgy/sophisticate” and I can’t wait to wear these new Fall fashions.

So now women (and men) everywhere can enjoy fabulous fashions that were once reserved only for Saks and Neiman’s. Happy Shopping!

*Homemade Onion Rings

Written on Friday, September 23rd, 2011 @ 8:10 am

Onion rings are one of those side dishes that we dread to make. It’s easier to order out or buy a frozen bag to bake in the oven.

This recipe promises that homemade onion rings are simple and easy; and the best compliment to any burger, wings or buffalo chicken sandwich.

Ingredients:

4 white onions, 1/2 gallon whole milk, 1/2 cup hot sauce, 4 cups of flour, salt/pepper, vegetable oil.

Prepare the onions. Slice off the 2 ends of each onion. Remove the paper and outermost layer of the onion whole. Slice into 1/2 inch rounds. Separate each ring. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the whole milk and hot sauce. Add the sliced onion rings to the bowl. Fill the large sauce pot with vegetable oil. Turn to high heat. In a large mixing bowl, add the flour. Season with salt and pepper. (Add enough salt and pepper that if you were to taste the flour you could actually taste the seasonings.)

To test to see if the oil is hot enough, sprinkle a little flour in the pot and if it starts cooking, the oil is hot enough.

Remove, a handful at a time, some onions from the milk/hot sauce mixture and toss in the flour. Remove any extra flour with your hands. Place the onions in the hot oil. Let cook 4-5 minutes or until the onions are golden brown.

When the onions are ready, remove from the oil and let drain on paper towels.

Now, I am not a fan of onion rings, but I think this will be the perfect recipe for my husband’s birthday! Enjoy!
